The Human Brain
Brain had always been the tough nut to crack for most of the Medical Students all over the World.
As we begin our Medical School, we were bombarded with a lot of information - predominantly starting with the parts of the Body (Anatomy) and their functions (Physiology).
I can readily tell you that - Anatomy and Physiology of the Whole body is on one Hand and on the other hand lies The Brain.
Like a Mafia don who is always on the run and no one can catch or understand him.
Till date most of the functions are still not fully understood, which explains the complexity behind this organ.
Most of the Medical Students find Brain very complicated, and the non- medical population are not even in the picture to understand such Organ.
Thats why I came up with an Idea - to cater to those who want to learn about the Parts and functions of the Brain - ofcourse in a simple language.
Believe me the Brain is the most interesting, at the same time the most complex organ in our Body.
Its like understanding women - They are very complicated to understand, but when you really try and care - they form the most intersting part of your life.
Enough with the introduction - simply put - I will give you an overview of Brain - its Parts and Functions - Part by Part in a series of Posts - This can be very intersting read for non Medical fellows, but can be handy for medical students too, especially the beginners.
Brain is a part of a whole system called the Nervous system. (see the name itself makes me "nervous")
You all know that our body is made up of small microscopic living things called The Cells.
There are different kind of cells and the PRESTIGIOUS cells of the nervous system which are responsible for most impotant functions are called NEURONS
- and hence the name - NEUROLOGY - Study of Nervous System - Bang on - the perfect intro to Neurology.
The Nervous system is composed of two parts
- The Central Nervous System and
- The Peripheral Nervous System
like the main switch and wires coming out of it, through which electrical impulses pass.
Yes, literally electrical impulses!
Nothing to worry, they wont shock you. It requires more than 30 volts of electricty to harm you and upto 500 Volts to cause burns and death.
Neurons, compared to our electric wires are very bad conductors of electricity, with a lot of leakages in between.
Next time when you forget something in exams - Blame your neurons!
The Neurons essentially sends 2 kinds of signals
1. to the Brain - the Senses - Sensory signals.
2. from the Brain - the Orders - Motor signals.
Just like there are a lot of connections in between wires - there are Connections called SYNAPSES in the nervous System.
I know this looks very interesting - but more on this later.
Lets also keep the Peripheral Nervous System out of the sight for now - Believe me its too complicated to start with.
Lets begin with the actual center - The BRAIN.
The Brain consists of 3 Parts - The Fore Brain, Mid Brain and Hind Brain.
The Forebrain forms the most of the outside Brain that we see - that folded Ugly thing we see.
Lets begin with the Forebrain...
